Betsy Markey, Democratic candidate for Colorado treasurer, will visit Pagosa Springs on Wednesday, Aug. 6, for a “meet and greet.” The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Pagosa Baking Company.

Markey has over 30 years of financial and management experience in the public and private sectors. Most recently, she served as assistant secretary for intergovernmental affairs in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

In 2008, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and proudly served the people of Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. She is one of only four women to have ever served in the U.S. Congress from Colorado.

Earlier, Markey was selected as a presidential management fellow, a two-year management program track in the federal government. She went on to hold positions in the U.S. Treasury Department and the U.S. Department of State, where she developed early computer security policies.

After leaving the State Department, Markey co-founded a software firm, Syscom Services. By 1995, Syscom ranked No. 99 in the Inc. 500 listing of America’s fastest-growing private companies. She also served as regional director of Colorado’s North Central and Eastern Plains for U.S. Sen.Ken Salazar, resigning to run for Congress in the conservative 4th District, which she won.
