Navajo State Park will hold an introductory archery class for kids ages 8-12 from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, May 31, at the Sambrito Wetlands Nature Area.
All equipment is provided. The class concentrates on range rules, safety rules, range courtesy and fundamentals of archery. The beginner session is appropriate for those who have never shot a bow or who have some previous experience.
Since the release of movies like the “Hunger Games,” “The Avengers” and “Lord of the Rings,” archery has become popular. In 2005, Colorado Parks and Wildlife launched its Archery in the Schools program, and now more than 40 Colorado schools offer archery as part of their physical education programs.
“Navajo State Park encourages outdoor recreation by providing access to quality outdoor opportunities,” said Janet Clawson, environmental education specialist. “Safety is always first. Horsing around by participants during the class is not allowed.”
Children should wear sturdy shoes and be dressed appropriately for the weather.
The Sambrito Wetlands are located on the western edge of Navajo Lake. To reach the trailhead, leave the main entrance and turn left on Colo. 151 and travel about 5 miles. Just as you are about to enter Allison, turn left onto County Road 988 and continue to the end of the road.
The class is limited to 10 kids. To sign up for the class, call the park at 883-2208.
The program is free, but every vehicle entering the park must have a pass. The daily entry fee is $7, and an annual pass costs $70.
