Special to The PREVIEW
For fifth- through eighth-grade girls and boys (2014-2015 school year), this week offers a unique opportunity to become members of the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir and the newly forming Boys Choir.
Auditions for choristers will be held in the Pagosa Springs Middle School band room from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 16, and 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 17. No individual audition times will be assigned.
The choirs, under the direction of Linda Parker, will begin rehearsals in the fall, with the girls rehearsing on Monday afternoons from 4-5 p.m. and the boys on Tuesday afternoons from 4-5 p.m.
The choirs are open to all boys and girls in fifth through eighth grades, whether in public school, home schooled or online programs.
The audition is intended to be non-threatening and fun. Judges will be listening for the child’s ability to match pitch and echo-clap simple rhythmic patterns. Students planning to audition will be asked to sing the first verse of “America” by memory, without accompaniment.
There is a $10 audition fee collected at the time of the audition, which will be applied to the $200 annual tuition if the student is chosen for membership in the choir. An audition form can be obtained from Parker (call 264-1434) or in the elementary and middle school offices. The annual tuition can be paid over the course of the school year and some scholarships are available.
In these choirs, students will learn to perform high-quality choral music in a variety of styles, including pop, folk and country, and some music will include choreography and props. The students will also be provided opportunities to participate in a summer trip to further their music education.
The girls choir began its inaugural year in August 2013. They have set the standard for those who come after them and for the newly forming boys choir.
“We want these ensembles to represent our town and to make the residents of Pagosa Springs proud. We also want to nurture the students in the arts as they perform beautiful music, as well as offer a forum through which they can enjoy a special camaraderie with choristers who may well become lifelong friends. This choir will also strengthen the level of skills for singers who go on to enter the high school choir program,” said Parker.
