By Linda Parker
Special to The PREVIEW
Boys in the fifth through eighth grades who like to sing and want to further their music education have an exciting opportunity. The new Pagosa Springs Boys Choir is forming as a brother group to the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir. Both groups will be under the direction of Linda Parker and will be accompanied by Sally Neel.
The boys choir will offer young boys the opportunity to learn about vocal and choral techniques and to perform in a select choral group. The choir is open to the public and home-schooled students.
The Pagosa community has come to know and respect the girls choir and now the boys have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of what promises to be another musical hallmark in Pagosa Springs.
Important dates and information:
• Orientation meeting: May 5, 6-7 p.m. in the middle school choir room to explain audition procedure and answer questions from parents and students.
• Audition dates: May 16, 4-6 p.m.; May 17, 9 a.m.-noon in middle school choir room.
• For boys in fifth through eighth grades for the 2014-2015 school year.
Audition packets for boys currently in fourth through seventh grades will be available from music teachers Lisa Hartley at the elementary and Malinda Fultz at the middle school. Forms will also be available in the school offices. Home-schooled students can receive a packet by calling Linda Parker at 264-1434.
In order for the boys choir to be successful, there must be a minimum of 15 boys selected for the choir.
Parker explained, “Middle-school aged boys present more of a vocal challenge than girls because of the changing voice. Depending on the voices, the boys will be singing parts right away, and we need a minimum number of voices on each part.”
Parker went on to say, “the Boys Choir will be a separate choir from the girls, but they may combine with the girls on occasion.”
In the Pagosa Springs Boys Choir, singers will perform high quality choral music in a variety of styles, including pop, folk and country, and some music will include choreography and props. The boys will also be provided opportunities to participate in summer music trips. This summer, the girls are spending two days in Santa Fe visiting the opera, several museums and art studios.
Rehearsal for the boys will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 4-5 p.m. in the Pagosa Springs Middle School choir room beginning the first Tuesday after school begins in the fall. The tuition fee for the PSBC will be $200 for each boy, plus $50 for a uniform. In addition, there will be a $10 audition fee. If the student is selected for the choir, the $10 will be credited toward the tuition cost. A payment plan for tuition will be offered and scholarships will be available.
“No child will be turned away due to an inability to pay,” said Parker. “While scholarships will be awarded on the basis of musical ability, we will help the family if there is a need for financial assistance. Parents will find a scholarship application in the audition packet.”
Parker added, “I am so hopeful that our boys will take advantage of this opportunity. We have many talented guys in Pagosa, and the Pagosa Springs Boys Choir will provide them with a place to succeed in music and performance.”
Anyone who is interested or has questions is encouraged to attend the orientation meeting on Monday, May 5, from 6-7 p.m. in the middle school choir room or to call Linda Parker at 264-1434.
