The Taste of Pagosa Cookbook, a fundraising project benefiting the Pagosa Multi-Purpose Pavilion, held its fourth in a series of recipe contests Friday, April 4. This contest featured breakfast and brunch items.

All proceeds from the event went to the land purchase for our newly acquired, temporary rink for next winter and a multi-purpose event structure that will have a seasonal surface, six months dry for our local R.I.P. Roller Derby girls, in-line hockey and roller skating and six months ice surface for figure skating, our local hockey groups, and provide a facility for music and special events.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by Daniel Lindsay on guitar serenading us with his great songs. Our silent auction offered up beautifully decorated Easter baskets filled with all kinds of goodies. Many local merchants donated auction items, as well.

Our judges were Pagosa Springs High School Principal Sean O’Donnell, Marge Alley, Amanda Petters, Janet Tjelmeland and Ernesto Renteria.

Winners in the breakfast category were: Tim Collins, gold for his cowboy casserole; Pam Schoemig, silver for her world-famous pumpkin pancakes; bronze went to Emily Jones for her sausage and mozzarella crepes; honorable mention to Kevin Schuchart for his sausage and gravy; and another honorable mention to Tari Woods for a crustless vegetable oven omelet.

Winners in the brunch category were: gold to Marge Alley for her spinach mushroom quiche; silver was awarded to Josh Pastrama for his bacon, corn, asparagus and Parmesan bread pudding; and the bronze went to Bonnie Hite for her white cheddar grits and spicy shrimp.

The People’s Choice Award went to Pam Schoemig for her world-famous pumpkin pancakes.

The deadline for becoming a sponsor in our cookbook is April 30. There are three levels of sponsorship: gold, silver and bronze at $100, $50 and $25 respectively.

We also have a limited number of our handmade cookbooks that will be available on June 6 at our “Winners Circle Buffet,” where we will be featuring an extravagant menu of all of our award-winning recipes.

The Taste of Pagosa Cookbook will go to press in mid-May and will be available for sale at local establishments and online on our future website.

To be in our cookbook enter a recipe in our last contest, “Entrées, Sides and Casseroles” on May 2 at The Quality Resort, where we will be featuring men’s and ladies’ Kentucky Derby hats as our table centerpieces and they will be available as silent auction items.
