The Four Corners Film Office (4CFO) will sponsor a viewing of the locally produced documentary “The Tao of Bluegrass: A Portrait of Peter Rowan” on Sunday, April 13, at noon at the Animas City Theatre in Durango. The special showing is part of the upcoming Durango Bluegrass Meltdown held annually in Durango.

The documentary, by Pagosa Springs filmmaker Christine Funk, is a personal portrait of legendary bluegrass musician Peter Rowan and takes an in-depth look at his artistic and spiritual endeavors.

Having honed his unique style as a member of Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys in the mid-1960s, Rowan’s fascination with world music and Buddhist meditation practice has steered him to collaborations with Jerry Garcia, Flaco Jimenez and Jamaican reggae greats and led him to groundbreaking recordings with Earth Opera, Seatrain and Old and in the Way. Several musical icons such as Sam Bush, Alison Krauss and Tim O’Brien are interviewed in the film.

Funk will be on hand to answer questions about the filmmaking process immediately following the showing. The documentary was produced by South 40 Films and Floating Records.

Tickets are $10 online or at the door, or $8 for any Bluegrass Meltdown ticket holders. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at If you are a Bluegrass Meltdown attendee and purchase the ticket online, you will be refunded $2 at theater.
