Lady Pirates advance to state championships Saturday

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirates earned their spot in the Colorado 3A girls basketball championship game Friday with a win over the Sterling Tigers.

The championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15.

The game was the closest of the year for the Lady Pirates.

The Pirates trailed 9-6 at the end of the first quarter, and took a 17-11 deficit into the half — the first halftime deficit for the Pirates on the season.

But the second half was a different story. The Pirates outscored Sterling 11-6 in the third to narrow the Tigers’ lead to one,  22-23, and scored 10 in the fourth quarter before Sterling found the net. As the final quarter progressed, Pagosa increased its lead to double digits, winning by a final score of 41-29.

Pagosa will now go on to play the winner of Lamar and Holy Family. That game takes place at 7 p.m. this evening (Friday).
