Wild turkeys are abundant in southwest Colorado, and if you’ve ever wanted to hunt these wily critters, you should plan to attend a free workshop, 6-8 p.m., March 20, at the Durango Recreation Center.

“We have a lot of turkeys in this part of Colorado, but they are very challenging to hunt,” said Leigh Gillette, education coordinator for Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Durango. “We’ll be providing some great tips.”

Local experts will explain behavior and biology of wild turkeys, their habitat needs, their life cycle and provide hunting techniques and strategies.

Participants will be instructed on turkey-calling techniques, and will get a chance to practice with a variety of calls provided by CPW. A display of gear for the well-equipped turkey hunter will also be displayed.

The workshop will be especially helpful for novice hunters and those unfamiliar with turkey hunting.
