A Colorado Springs man was killed in an accident east of Pagosa Springs late Thursday afternoon, with the accident closing the highway for more than two hours.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, near mile marker 150. A 2000 Dodge Caravan was traveling eastbound on U.S. 160 when the driver lost control on the icy surface and the van crossed into the oncoming lane while rotating counterclockwise.

The right side of the Caravan then hit the front of a 2003 Ford F150 traveling westbound on the highway.

Both vehicles came to rest on their wheels, with the Caravan facing north and the pickup facing west.

The driver of the Caravan, William Burns, 58, of Colorado Springs, was declared dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Ford, James Hopkins, 78, of Ignacio, sustained minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.
