A chill is in the air, the leaves are beginning to change, and the first of the fall sports is nearing its conclusion.
The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team will return to Colorado City, this time for the regional tournament to be played next Tuesday.
But, en route to regionals, members of the team took part in two tournaments this week.
Monday, Pirates Jaylon Ochoa and Casey Mudroch headed to Durango for a quick round at Hillcrest Golf Club before heading out for Tuesday’s tournament in Colorado City.
In Durango, Mudroch notched an 85 an Ochoa tallied a 95.
“He played really well,” coach Mark Faber said of Mudroch, stating that the Pirate had a, “great round going,” but stumbled on the final holes.
No other results were available from the day due to the Pirates’ early departure, and because Pagosa did not compete as a team in the tournament.
Tuesday, five Pirates headed to Hollydot Golf Course in Colorado City — also the site of the upcoming regional action — for the Rye tournament.
The team finished ninth among 24 teams on the day — one of the team’s top finishes on the season.
“They’re playing a little better, they really are,” Faber said. “We’re kind of getting there.”
Ochoa led the Pirates with a score of 84 on the par-71 course, followed by Jake Keuning with an 87.
Taylor Heitz notched a 92 on the day, while Mudroch and Bryce Jacquez both ended with a 95.
“Everybody played pretty well,” Faber said.
And the strong finish on the course is a promising sign for the four Pirates taking part in Tuesday’s regional tournament: Mudroch, Ochoa, Keuning and Heitz.
The team will practice on the course Monday before playing for real on Tuesday.
Faber said 26 teams are expected to play in the tournament, which includes 1A, 2A and 3A competition (Pagosa is 3A).
“I hope the weather holds. We’ve been playing in hot weather all year and this is about the time of year it changes,” Faber said. “We’re excited for it, we really are. They’re doing what they’re supposed to do.”
Following regionals, the state tournament will be held Sept. 30, where the top individuals and teams will face off.
