Summer is here and the Pagosa Springs Farmers Market opens this Saturday.

This is the seventh year of operation for this event, sponsored by the nonprofit Southwest Organization for Sustainability.

It’s time to mark every Saturday on your calendar from June 22 to Sept. 14 with the words “Farmers Market” and make a promise to yourself that you will collect your shopping bags and arrive early.

Ponderosa Lumber continues to be generous with our community. A nice gesture would be a “thank you” when you are doing your shopping there.

Alan Meinhausen is vendor coordinator for those interested in their own booth. Give him a call at 946-3525. If your interest is specific to the Small Growers Coop, call Barbara Asprey at 264-1240.

If you have visited the Market in the past, you know that just being there is a fun community experience.

With the opening of our small town market, we can take pride in joining a movement that is nationwide and 7,800 strong. Though small in size, we offer the same important elements of community and healthy food offered by the USDA as it opened the 18th season of the USDA Farmers Market in Washington D.C. Their June 6 press release claims, “The USDA Farmers Market is part of USDA’s continued effort to encourage everyone to eat healthy and provide nationwide access to healthy foods every day via more than 7,800 farmers markets across the nation.”
