The Ross Aragon Community Center, through a partnership with the Town of Pagosa Springs Recreation Department, is offering a slate of new activities for youngsters ages 4-12 this summer.

The programs, which will be held at the community center and are collectively deemed “Kickin’ It During Summer,” will focus mainly on science- and art-based activities, but will also highlight a few new introductory sports programs.

For example, registration is now open for the June session of archery for ages 6-12. For ages 6-8, classes will be held Mondays from 3-4 p.m. until the end of the month. Classes for ages 9-12 will be held Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m. throughout the month. Cost is $20 per student; space is limited. Other sports classes to be offered later this summer are disc golf, sand volleyball and golf.

For those interested in science-based activities, a seven-week course titled “Summer of Science” is being offered for ages 4-12 during June and July. Classes will be held outdoors (weather permitting) and focus on age-appropriate, hands-on experiments and instruction. Classes will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and split into age groups 4-7 and 8-12.

Most classes include take-home items for participating students. Cost for the program is $50; space is limited. The schedule is as follows: June 6 — how to make sunprints; June 13 — miniature rocket propulsion (nonflammable fuels); June 20 — solar cooking; June 27 — bug catching/identification; July 11 and 18 — nature photography; July 25 — trip to Rocky Mountain Wildlife park.

Registrations for all programs are available at the community center front desk and recreation office. Registrations are also available through the recreation department link at and will be provided to local schools, as well.

    Youth baseball

Registration for this year’s youth baseball leagues ends tomorrow.

The recreation office will accept registrations for coach-pitch division (ages 6, 7 and 8), and the 9- and 10-year-old division. The office will also accept registrations for the 11-12 division and 13-14 division, but if the number of registrations submitted is not sufficient to support play in these age brackets, registration fees may be refunded and formal league play may be canceled.

Registrations are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and are available for download through the recreation department link at All registrations should be submitted to the recreation office.

Cost to participate in the program is $30 per player and $15 for each additional child in the same family who participates. Team coaches and sponsors are needed and appreciated.

The season is tentatively scheduled to begin in early June and should run through mid-July.

Classes, which have been strictly limited to no more than 10 students per age group, began April 16 and will run through May 17. Classes will be held in the middle school “mat room” (wrestling room) according to the following schedule:

Classes for ages 6 and 7 will be held Tuesdays and/or Thursdays (parents have the option to choose one day or the other, but not both) from 4-4:50 p.m. Classes for ages 8 and 9 will be held Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 5-5:50 p.m. Classes for ages 10 and up will be held Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 6-6:50 p.m.

In addition, classes will be held Fridays from 2-2:50 p.m. for ages 4 and 5, and an introductory class for ages 3 and 4 will be held Fridays from 3-3:50 p.m. Class size for Fridays will be limited to eight.
