La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) is asking businesses and residents in its service territory to be on the alert for potential copper thieves.

A Bayfield business, BC Fabrication, was vandalized during the overnight hours, Jan. 20, with approximately 20 feet of copper taken.

“The thieves cut into the live conduit, and it burned up part of the equipment, but that didn’t stop them. They were determined to get the wires,” said Steve Gregg, LPEA manager of operations. “With people struggling for cash these days, we’ve heard about copper theft occurring all across the country, but we hadn’t seen it in our service territory. Now we have.”

Gregg notes that all utility trucks are well marked and the workers will have identification. Community members are urged to call 911 if they note any suspicious activity around utility boxes.
