Coaches, players, parents create successful volleyball season

It’s the time of year to give thanks, and the recreation department staff would like to recognize all of the youth volleyball coaches who stepped up to ensure another successful season.

We cannot overstate our thanks to these instructors. Without the efforts of the folks listed here, administering an enjoyable program becomes nearly impossible.

In the 9-10 division, we thank Jessica Quick, Sanya Peterson and Charmain Smith for providing their time and knowledge. Trying to provide a fundamental understanding of the game to over 40 young, energized athletes while countless volleyballs ricochet throughout the gym is a challenging endeavor, especially when you only have an hour per night to teach. Each performed admirably.

Coaches garnering thanks in the 11- and 12-year-old division include Sheri Alhardt, Lisa Scott, Karen Ross, Marcie Lewis and Lucille Stretton. Likewise, local student athletes Devyn Doctor and Rose Graveson found enough time in their busy high school schedules to coach a team, and honored their commitment to a late schedule on tournament night, even though they had a trigonometry test looming the next day.

Of course, equally important to the program is the support from the participants, and we would like to thank all of the players, their parents and guardians for contributing to this year’s program. With limited gym space and time, schedules often become hectic for all, but our participants and parents took every obstacle in stride.

As always, thanks again to each of you for your continued sportsmanship, dedication and support.

    7-8 basketball

Schedules for the 7-8 youth basketball program are available at the recreation office in Town Hall and have also been posted on the recreation department link at

Games are tentatively scheduled to begin the first week of December. Due to the large number of participants and limited amount of gym space available during the holiday season, games may be scheduled Monday-Thursday at either 5:15 p.m., 6:15 p.m. or 7:15 p.m. through late December. All games will be played in the Ross Aragon Community Center gymnasium.

Registration for the 9-10 and 11-12 divisions will begin later this month; the season for these divisions will not begin until early January.

For more information call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

    Soccer photos

Coaches and parents who ordered youth soccer photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to arrange pick up of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and pictures as soon as they are available.

The recreation staff would also like to thank Mr. Laydon for accommodating another busy schedule during this year’s youth soccer season.

This year marks the 16th year Jeff has offered professional photography service to our programs while donating all of the team photographs used in the commemorative plaques free of charge; thanks again.
