With about 20 seconds left in regulation play and a 0-0 score, Basalt High School’s Sean Ryan found the back of the net past Pirate keeper Quinn Smith.

And, just like that, the Pagosa Springs High School boys’ soccer team ended its playoff run in the first round, following more than 79 minutes of scoreless play and overtime on the horizon.

Smith is credited with nine saves in the game by website, and the Basalt keeper is credited with one.

No further stats were available by presstime.

The game was the last for 10 Pirate seniors.

Basalt went on to lose by a score of 1-0 to Faith Christian Saturday (Faith Christian beat Fountain Valley 4-0 Friday).

In other playoff action, fellow conference team Telluride was victorious over Arrupe Jesuit 4-2 Friday before losing 2-1 to Coal Ridge Saturday. Coal Ridge had defeated KIPP Denver by a score of 3-0 Friday.

Throughout the top-32 bracket, all higher-seeded teams have been victorious, with the top eight seeded teams still standing.

Friday, the top eight teams face off in round three of playoff action, as follows:

    • No. 1 The Classical Academy takes on No. 8 Faith Christian.

    • No. 2 Colorado Academy plays No. 7 Jefferson.

    • No. 3 Coal Ridge plays No. 6 Frontier Academy.

    • No. 4 Holy Family takes on No. 5 Kent Denver.

Winners of those games will face off on Nov. 7, with the final to take place Nov. 10.

Further information on the Pirates’ season stats and any postseason honors garnered will be available in future issues of The SUN.
