The Lady Pirates volleyball team took down the Aztec Tigers in four very heated sets: 25-14, 23-25, 26-24, and 25-23.

“The girls played really well, with excellent communication during the match,” coach Connie O’Donnell said. The Lady Pirates’ strengths of serving and passing were dominant throughout the match, helping the Pirates to stay on top.

Senior Gabby Pajak had 15 kills. Sophomore Payton Shahan had 10 kills.

Pajak served 17 times and had three aces.

“We were also much better with blocking, and that will continue to be a focus the next few weeks,” O’Donnell said.

    Shahan had five blocks.

Senior Megan Davey had 14 assists.

Pajak had 19 serve receives, and senior Angie Gallegos had 18.

Gallegos had 22 digs, Pajak 17.

“Angie had fewer digs than usual, but that is because we were taking care of business at the net and not depending on Angie and the rest of the back row to save us all of the time,” O’Donnell said, adding, “I feel like we are improving in the places that need improvement, and I’m looking forward to our future games.”

Tonight, at 6:30 p.m. the Pirates will take on Monte Vista on the home court. O’Donnell encourages all fans to come out and support the Pirates and to make sure they wear pink to the game, since it is the Pirates’ “pink digs” game for breast cancer awareness.

By Oct. 29, the Pirates will know if they made it to the post season.

This year, O’Donnell explains that the top 36 teams according to Maxpreps.com will make it to the post season, which includes 12 regions of three teams each. The regional tournaments will be held the first Saturday in November.
