The Pagosa Springs Pirates varsity volleyball team is storming into the last stretch of regular season competition with the confidence of a winner.

Last Thursday, the Pirates took on their doppelganger, the Monte Vista Pirates, and didn’t give Monte Vista a fighting chance. Pagosa won the match in three sets: 25-11, 25-14, and 25-18.

This victory put Pagosa at 3-3 in league play.

“The game last Thursday was really fun,” coach Connie O’Donnell said, continuing, “There were a bunch of people wearing pink and I felt that there was a bunch of community support.”

The fans had been asked to sport pink colors at the game in recognition of breast cancer awareness month.

“The girls played well and had good communication, which is what we were trying to focus on,” O’Donnell said.

Senior Megan Davey had 19 assists. Sophomore Payton Shahan had 14 kills; senior Gabby Pajak had 10. Senior Angie Gallegos had 15 digs.

The next game is against Alamosa, today, in Alamosa at 6 p.m. Saturday, the Lady Pirates host their last home game of the season, against Centauri, at 7 p.m.

These games will bring our regular season to an end, and then we will most likely be involved in the regional tournament during the first weekend of November,” O’Donnell said. Only one team from each region will make it to state.

“It will be nice to have another go at Alamosa. They are still ahead of us in the rankings,” O’Donnell said. Bayfield currently leads the Intermountain League. Alamosa is in second place, Pagosa third.
