The Pagosa Springs High School soccer team continued its winning ways last weekend with a win over conference foe Bayfield.

The Pirates were off to a quick start against the Wolverines Saturday, with shots fired at the goal within the first minute.

The first goal, though, came in the seventh minute, from freshman Matthew Breman, his second on the season.

As the offensive barrage continued, senior Diego Guttierrez found the back of the net in the 27th minute, following up on a blocked shot. The goal, Gutierrez’s seventh on the season,  increased the Pirate lead to two.

Continuing the pace, the Pirates scored again 10 minutes into the second half, the strike coming from senior Sully Smith, his first goal of the season.

In the end, the Pirates defeated the Wolverines to remain undefeated at 4-0 in conference play, with Bayfield falling to 0-3 in the conference.

Gutierrez recorded 12 shots on the day while, on the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Quinn Smith notched four saves.

Coach Lindsey Kurt-Mason could not be reached for comment by presstime Wednesday, and results for Tuesday’s scheduled game against Durango High School were not available.

Next up on the Pirates’ schedule are conference matches in Telluride (4 p.m. Friday) and Ridgway (11 a.m. Saturday). Tuesday, Oct. 2, the squad heads to Center for a 4 p.m. match against the Vikings.
