Mary Maxine Lattin

Mary Maxine Lattin passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, at home, surrounded by family. She was 91 years old. A rosary will be recited Saturday, Feb. 3, at 9 a.m. and the eulogy will be read at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. all at Pope John Paul II Catholic Church on South Pagosa Boulevard in Pagosa Springs, Colo.

 Maxine was born June 22, 1932, to Jose V. and Susanna Montoya in Edith, Colo. She grew up in Edith, Colo., and numerous places in Archuleta County and northern New Mexico. In her youth, Maxine took on the honor of caring for her brothers and sisters and left her schooling. She married Dewey Lattin April 25, 1952. The young family made their home in Pagosa Springs, and Dewey worked at the Piedra and San Juan Saw Mill. Maxine excelled in caring for her children and making her home a place of love. She also worked in the Pagosa school system as a kitchen aide for 50 years.

Maxine enjoyed fishing, crocheting and cooking, but most all, her grandkids and great-grandkids. She was a member of the Guadalupanas and an active member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She was a mentor to her family and other moms, including her daughter-in-laws. Her feathered friends, ducks, geese, dogs and pets were always cared for and loved.

She is survived by her sons, Terry (Vicki), LeRoy (Linda) and Gary; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family; and siblings, Ray Montoya, Alice Contreras and Peggy Vautier.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey; son Ronnie; great-granddaughter Casey Jordan; and siblings Bellarmino and Joe Montoya.
