Jonathan Martin Montoya, 43, lifelong resident of Pagosa Springs, passed away May 15 after a lengthy illness. Jonathan, aka Jon, was born Aug. 13, 1979, to John O. Montoya and Mary Ann Valdéz. He married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Romine, July 16, 2010. Jon held various jobs over the years, one of which was as a lift operator at Wolf Creek Ski Resort, and later his own fencing business. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, José Eugenio and Glorifica Montoya and John F. and Fedelina Valdéz; his uncles Gene, Leonard and Levi Montoya; his mother-in-law, Sharon Romine; and sister-in-law, Hope Eckstein. Surviving him are his wife, Cheryl; daughters, Amber and Kalista Montoya; parents John O. Montoya and Mary Ann Valdéz; siblings Nathan, Michael, Eric Chisholm and Rachel, Jake Christner and Josie Montoya; sister-in-law Amanda Richardson and father-in-law Marvin Romine; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Phillip and Cherylinn Romine, Richard and Maria Levitt, Brian and Christina Cook, Joe and Kayla Romine and John Romine; aunts and uncles Servilia Trujillo, Norma and Vicente Duran, Rosie and Delfin Griego, Ruthie Montoya, Jake and Theresa (Tia Teddie) Maestas and Joe M. and Sue Valdéz; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Jonathan and his friendly, contagious smile will be greatly missed.

Cremation has occurred. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hood Mortuary in Durango.
