Our privileges

The Fourth of July holiday is upon us in Pagosa Country and, as with all significant holidays, the many opportunities for enjoyment rest on the foundation of more meaningful considerations.

Tend our garden

The controversy about creation of a county nuisance ordinance has the makings of a confrontation of two equally unrealistic, ideas — both largely illusions, neither acknowledging the reality of human interactions or, in particular, the reality of this community at this point in its economic and cultural life.

Assurances, please

It’s a good time for some assurances, folks. Things are dicey; the county is digging its way out of a financial crisis, the economy is uncertain. Most of us are concerned and, if we pay close attention to reports, we tend to get real worried. This reservoir project of yours has some us on edge. And we say “yours,” because we never voted on it.

We need assurances. Here’s the way it looks: Kind of like a potential train wreck. We are familiar with train wrecks — reference the county crisis — and we are not eager to endure another.

When the wind blows

A friend stopped by the office the other day and we engaged in conversation, one very much like so many conversations we have had over the course of many years. He is a local politician and community leader and, over the years, we have observed him as a public figure from near and far. In a personal sense, he is someone we love and admire, regardless of whether we agree.
