CDC: Pagosans review community assessment

Health service district receives glowing financial report
The Upper San Juan Health Service District Board of Directors met in regular session Tuesday night and, among other things, approved an outside audit of its financial statements for the years ending Dec. 31, 2009 and 2008. The consulting and accounting firm, Chadwick, Steinkirchner, Davis & Co., P.C. of Grand Junction, Colo. performed the audit.

Archuleta School District budget: ‘We’re surviving’
Having already cut well over $1 million from its 2010-2011 budget, the Archuleta School District 50 Joint appears to have done as well as can be expected dealing with those cuts and hopes to be over $100,000 to the good when next month’s state audit is completed.

CSAP results a mixed bag for Pagosa students
Showing improvement in some areas and a need for concern in others, students in the Archuleta School District 50 Joint showed mostly improvement in achievement scores for the last school year, according to a report presented by District Assistant Superintendent Linda Reed at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

Executive director takes helm at CDC
Steve Vassallo officially took the helm as the Pagosa Springs CDC (Community Development Corporation) executive director at last Monday’s meeting.

Vassallo was selected to head the CDC last June after an extensive search that examined candidates from across the U.S., as well as in Archuleta County.


‘Village’ developer offers new land swap
The proposed Village at Wolf Creek has taken on another possible form, this time with a modification of the sought-after land exchange with the U.S. Forest Service.

The current proposed land swap, for just under178 acres of Village-owned land around Alberta Park and the lower half of the waterfall area (an area of wetlands and skiable terrain) for the same amount of USFS land northeast of Alberta Park with U.S. 160 frontage, is a lesser amount than originally proposed.


LPEA obtains variance for substation height
The proposed La Plata Electric Association Ponderosa electrical substation was again the topic of discussion at an Archuleta County Board of County Commissioners’ meeting, this time with a request by LPEA for a height variance to accommodate substation equipment.

LPEA revises policy for renewable generation
La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) has revised its renewable generation policy to provide a more consistent and equitable rebate amount to member-customers, and ensure sustainable incentives for installation of local solar PV, wind and micro-hydro electricity generating systems at both residences and small commercial operations.

Electricity usage monitors available free-of-charge to the public
In an effort to help its customers understand and potentially reduce their electricity usage, La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) is now offering “Kill A Watt” electricity usage monitors, available on loan through area libraries and from the cooperative’s offices.

SourceGas requests Colorado non-gas rate adjustment
SourceGas Distribution LLC (“SourceGas”) announced June 24 it has submitted a request to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (“CPUC”) for a rate adjustment that would increase its non-gas rates. The requested amount is $6,042,185 and addresses increased costs associated with providing quality utility service to SourceGas customers.

Ed Center to add new learning technology
The Education Center is ramping up for the future.

As part of the successful Department of Local Affairs Beanpole II WiFi grant awarded to the Town of Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County, the Education Center will create and showcase the latest in visual communications technology with three new broadcast/receive video/teleconferencing classrooms.
