Community Band presents Fall Concert Saturday

Concert time is almost here.

Members of the Pagosa Springs Community Band are excited to present the Fall Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Pagosa Springs High School auditorium.

Admission to this concert is free.

In addition to the full band, the concert will feature three small instrumental ensembles.

First up will be the Divertimento String Quartet, featuring Kate Kelley playing viola, Jean Broderick on cello, and Nancy Smith and Heidi Tanner on violin. The Divertimento String Quartet has been in existence since 2008 and this particular lineup has played together for one year. The quartet will play a classic “Tango,” written by Michael McLean. This piece will conjure visions of a sultry evening in Rio de Janeiro and senoritas dancing with roses in their teeth.

Next in our lineup of small ensembles will be the Pagosa Brass Quintet, featuring Larry Elginer and Larry Baisdon on trumpet, Dan Burch playing trombone, D’Ann Artis on horn and Dave Krueger on the tuba. This ensemble is composed entirely of players from within the band’s membership who have been playing together since the inception of the community band in the fall of 2011. These players are all skilled on their instruments and will offer a rare opportunity for Pagosans to hear a live brass ensemble. The group will play a piece called “Mozart Moments,” which features familiar melodies from a variety of works composed by Mozart. Each of the members of this ensemble has played professionally and you will be dazzled by their combined sound.

Our last small ensemble of the evening will feature the band’s many talented clarinetists — six altogether. This group features Jarrett Chaney, Lisa Hartley, Al Olson, Kathy Baisdon and Malinda Fultz on clarinet and, on bass clarinet, Tim Bristow. The ensemble will play the popular favorite “The Entertainer,” by Scott Joplin. A piano rag written by Joplin in 1902, it was revitalized in the 1970s when it was recorded along with a collection of Joplin’s compositions by Joshua Rifkin. The recording was then used in the popular movie “The Sting,” released in 1973, which catapulted the piece to stardom in both the popular and classical music worlds. You will enjoy the clarinet sextet’s arrangement of this familiar and loved tune.

In addition to ensembles, the concert will feature horn soloist D’Ann Artis, playing two movements of “Mozart’s Concerto for Horn in E Flat.”

Don’t forget, the full band will present several exciting pieces such as “The Wedding Dance” and “The 1812 Overture,” as well as the charming “Alexander’s Ragtime Band.”

The Pagosa Springs Community Band looks forward to providing an evening of music enjoyment free of charge. Please join us this Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. We look forward to seeing you there.
