With a 2-1 record over the last week, the Pagosa Springs High School soccer team faces an uphill battle during the remainder of the season to overtake the Telluride Miners for the top league spot.
The Miners are undefeated on the season, 5-0-1 in league, topping the Pirates, who have a 6-1 league record and 7-2 overall record.
The Pirates, meanwhile, started out their weekend with a 3-1 loss to the Miners on Friday.
The Pirates took a one-goal deficit into the half with a 2-1 score, but were unable to match Telluride, who scored one more goal in the second half.
Stats and comments about the game were not available by presstime Wednesday.
Saturday, the Pirates continued their road trip, taking on Ridgway in another league match, this time walking away with a 1-0 win.
The game’s sole goal came from Diego Gutierrez off an assist from fellow senior Dean Hampton.
Then, Tuesday, the team headed to Center to take on the Vikings, who have yet to win a game this season.
The Pirates returned home with a 10-0 win on the books, which included a hat trick (three goals) from Gutierrez, and a goal each from Eli Stephens, Garek Erskine, Sulley Smith, Sam Chronowski, Coltin Polczynski, Hampton and Garret Lyle.
Now, the Pirates will look to better their record in a series of games that includes two league matches.
Friday, the team heads to Crested Butte for a 3:30 p.m. game. Tuesday, the team heads for a makeup game against Durango High School, scheduled for 3 p.m. Next Thursday, Oct. 11, the team welcomes Alamosa to Golden Peaks Stadium for a 4 p.m. matchup.
