A treasure at the Education Center

Pagosa is full of treasures. Treasures in our scenery, in our natural resources, in our …

But one of our biggest treasures is our people.

Living in a small town, it is easier to see these shining gems. One clear-cut beauty is brilliantly displayed in someone we have been lucky enough to import — MaryCruz Magdaleno.

MaryCruz has been a friend of Archuleta County Education Center since November 2003. She first came to us seeking her GED, with limited English language skills. She was determined to complete her GED in English, although it is available in Spanish. She was diligent in attending classes and advancing in her GED program until she completed it in May of 2012. Each time she entered our building, she brought her multi-faceted, jewel-like personality with her and spread it all around.

She has experienced many successes in her life, but her GED completion is said to be one of her favorites. She made lifelong friends with the instructors and staff at the Ed Center over her nine years of attendance. She would often return from travels bearing gifts from the many ports of call she visited with friends Janice and Bob Moomaw.

Her latest gift to us was volunteering to paint the interior of our Education Center. She wanted to give back to us in a tangible way.

Malcolm Roger, an Ed Center board member, had been very involved with our remodeling project, but he was finding it hard to complete the project.

MaryCruz to the rescue!

We wish to thank MaryCruz for her generosity in lending a hand in such a practical way, but most of all for being a deeply treasured friend — a friendship that will only increase in value as the seasons pass.
