Art songs and arias with Cherise Lukow and Claire Foison

Paris prima donna Cherise Lukow performs German, Italian and French arias and art songs in concert, accompanied by pianist Claire Foison at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts.

Lukow is a coloratura soprano — an opera singer known for her elaborate vocal ornamentation. She graduated with a Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste from the prestigious Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris and bases her performing career out of Paris, France. Lukow’s Pagosa concert follows her season with the Santa Fe Opera Company and takes place just before she returns to Europe.

About the vocal and piano music in the concert: an art song is a solo piece written for concert performance; an aria is a solo piece from an opera or an oratorio.

“This is the concert to bring your non-opera-loving friends to,” says classical flutist Jessica Peterson. “They will fall in love with Cherise’s awe-inspiring singing. I heard Cherise Lukow less than a year ago and feel lucky to have a chance to hear her live again so soon. She sings with exceptional nuance and beauty, and she is lively, funny and charming. Her natural musicality and masterful technique allow her to explore all the subtleties of the music.”

Claire Foison is a concert pianist who has performed in the U.S., Japan, France and Africa. She is professor at the Boulogne-Billancourt Conservatory in France where she performs with Lukow as the duo Divines Divas. Foison is a versatile and passionate musician who commands the Grand Répertoire from 18th to 20th century music.

“We are so thrilled to have Cherise Lukow and Claire Foison at the Center for our Summer Concert Series,” says PSCA director Laura Moore. “Cherise is a truly gifted singer and an opera darling with tremendous stage presence. Cherise is just finishing her summer with the Santa Fe Opera and we were lucky to grab her for this fabulous show before she flies back to Paris. This is the absolute, cannot-miss concert of the summer.”

Tickets are $26 in advance and $30 at the door. Call the Pagosa Center for the Arts at 731-SHOW (7469) or order online at www.pagosacenter.org.

This is the last concert in the Summer Concert Series produced by Elation Center for the Arts in collaboration with PSCA. Sponsors are The Pagosa Springs SUN, Mountain Landing Guest Quarters and photographer Jeff Laydon.
