Manhunt underway in Dulce area

Personnel from New Mexico and the FBI are engaged in a manhunt in the Dulce Area in New Mexico, south of the state line and Archuleta County.

The search began Tuesday after a suspect, identified as Rex Michael Sherwood, 48, shot at Jicarilla Apache Nation Police and New Mexico State Police officers following a traffic stop in Dulce.

According to The Jicarilla Chieftain, the incident began with a traffic stop late Wednesday afternoon. Sherwood was reported to be driving a delivery truck and he was stopped on U.S. 64 in Dulce for failing to signal.

Sherwood was reportedly uncooperative at that scene and backup law enforcement was requested. Sherwood refused to provide identification and refused to allow a search of his vehicle. Assistance was then requested from the New Mexico State Police.

According to The Chieftain, Sherwood was reported to be wearing a bulletproof vest. He fled from the tribal police at the scene of the stop. Tribal police officers pursued the suspect and were joined by personnel from the state police. Sherwood’s vehicle reportedly narrowly missed colliding with a state police car. Sherwood slowed then jumped from the vehicle and began firing at the officers. It is estimated he fired as many as 70 rounds in a few minutes’ time. Abandoning the vehicle, the suspect fled on foot into the mountains outside Monero.

The Chieftain reports an unspecified number of explosives and weapons were found in the abandoned vehicle.

The suspect was reported to be wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt, a blue jacket and a baseball cap. He is six feet tall, weighs 160 pounds, has brown hair and brown eyes.

A warrant has been issued for Sherwood’s arrest. Archuleta County Sheriff Peter Gonzales said his department was contacted and informed of the situation. He said his deputies were put on alert, but added that the department had not been approached as of mid-day to provide assistance.

Anyone with information about Sherwood’s whereabouts is asked to call the Jicarilla Apache Nation Police at (505) 759-3222 or the New Mexico State Police at (505) 753-2277.
