David Cammack named Rotarian of the Year

The Rotary Club of Pagosa Springs is pleased to announce David Cammack as the 2011-12 recipient of the club’s highest honor, the Rotarian of the Year award.

David graduated from Pagosa Springs High School and, after attending college and law school, he and his wife, Mary Helen, and their two sons, Jake and Dan, returned to Pagosa in 1992. David joined Rotary in 1993 and has been an active member ever since.

Meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide and the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” conveys the true humanitarian spirit of Rotary. This year’s Rotarian of the Year, David Cammack, exemplifies service above self. David is currently serving his fourth term as a member of the Rotary board of directors and is in his third year as program chair for our weekly meetings. In previous years, he has served the club as sergeant at arms and was responsible for the Rotary Golf tournament for many years.

David has participated in every fund-raising effort the club has undertaken through the years, notably Casino Night and the Follies. Being an avid outdoorsman and hunter, David even organized a turkey competition fund-raiser for a number of years.

David is always willing to volunteer his time and talents. Every year Rotary donates a dictionary to every third-grader in our local schools and David can be seen hauling boxes of books to the elementary school and participating enthusiastically in Dictionary Day in the third-grade classrooms. The Rotary Club is an active partner with Loaves and Fishes and David is often seen volunteering, helping with the cooking, serving or cleaning at the Thursday noon meals at the Parish Hall. Whether the Rotary Club is picking up trash along U.S. 160, ringing the bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas time, or providing games or books for needy families during the holiday season, David can be counted on to be an active and cheerful participant, always helping people in need.

If you ask David about his Rotary service, he is quick to point out, “The rewards that our family have received far exceed anything we have given to the community.”

Over the years, David and his family have hosted seven different Rotary exchange students from many different parts of the world. He and his family enjoy lifetime friendships with their former exchange students and families. At Rotary meetings, David often reports on e-mails exchanged, phone calls and visits from past exchange students.

Rotary Club of Pagosa Springs wants to acknowledge the significant service to our community that David Cammack has selflessly given over many years. We are proud to give him the honor of Rotarian of the Year.
