Pagosa Lakes Porpoises compete in Cortez and Farmington

The 2012 summer swim season is underway and members of the Pagosa Lakes Porpoises Swim Team kicked it off to a great start.

The Porpoises traveled to Cortez June 8-10 for their first long-course meet. Seven athletes — Fabiola Acevedo-Auli, V.V. Acevedo-Auli, Andie Miller, Emily Bryant, Trenton Cordova and Zach Irons — competed in the three-day event.

Fabiola, age 10, placed first in 100-meter freestyle and the 100 Individual Medley. She placed second in the 200 freestyle and the 50 breaststroke; third in the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke. Her older sister, V.V., placed in the top three in the 400 freestyle, the 50 butterfly and the 100 butterfly. Andie Miller represented the Porpoises in the Girls 13-14 division, placing in the top 10 in all of her events and scoring 42 points for the team. In the girls senior division (15 and over), Katie Armbrecht, age 17, and Emily Bryant, 16, demonstrated their talent with top-five finishes in all events. Armbrecht placed first in the 200 IM and second in the 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyle events. Bryant placed second in the 200 backstroke, third in the 100 and 200 freestyles, 100 backstroke, and 200 Individual Medley. She placed fourth in the 50 and 400 freestyle. Trenton Cordova, 12, swam the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events, the 50 and 100 backstroke, the 50 and 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Competing in the Boys Senior Division, Zach Irons placed second in all of his events.

With only four days to recover and prepare for the next competition, the Porpoises traveled to Farmington to swim in the Father’s Day Invitational June 15-17. Sofia Raymond, age 10, placed second in the 100 back, third in the 200 free and fourth in the 50 free. Fabiola Acevedo finished first in all eight of the events she swam. V.V. Acevedo placed second in the 400 freestyle, third in the 100 freestyle, fourth in the 200 IM, and fifth in the 200 free, 50 back and 50 butterfly. Isabelle Pajak joined V.V. in the 11-12 division, dropping enormous amounts of time from last summer. Pajak finished in the top 10 in all of her events. Katie Armbrecht finished first in the 50, 200 and 400 freestyle events and the 200 IM. Emily Bryant placed first in the 100 free, 100 and 200 backstroke events, and the 100 butterfly events. She finished second in the 50 and 200 freestyle and third in the 200 IM. Trenton Cordova placed in the top five in the 200 IM, the 50 and 100 backstroke events, and the 50 and 100 breaststroke, as well as the 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyles. Zach Irons dropped time in his events, swimming the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Austin Miller, age 18, placed first in the 100 and 200 butterfly, second in the 200 free, the 200 IM, the 100 and 200 backstroke, and third in the 400 freestyle.

The Porpoises will travel to Montrose July 13-15.
