Pagosa Springs Destination ImagiNation’s students shine at Global Finals Tournament

Twenty-one Destination ImagiNation students in four teams represented Pagosa Springs schools in the Global Finals Tournament at the University of Tennessee in late May.

Destination ImagiNation is a worldwide academic competition that teaches creativity, teamwork and problem solving, not only in the United States, but in all seven Canadian provinces and thirty other nations. Fifteen foreign nations traveled to the United States and competed at Global Finals this year.

Pagosa’s four teams won their competitions at the Colorado Affiliate Tournament in Denver in April, qualifying for the Global contest. Numerous individuals and businesses from Pagosa Springs helped fund the students’ travel.

The Pagosa Imaginators7 won 5th place overall in the high school level Science Challenge, the Solar Stage, in a field of 62 teams. The Imaginators7 placed 3rd in the Instant Challenge portion of the contest, proving the problem-solving skills and team communication they’ve developed over their seven years of Destination ImagiNation experience.

“I’ve been to Globals five years in a row and we’re (Imaginators) here to place at the top,” Brooke Hampton stated to the Global Finals ’12 Daily News, the DI newspaper. Brooke graduated from Pagosa Springs High School at the Destination ImagiNation graduation ceremony Friday evening, May 25, at the World’s Fair Amphitheater in Knoxville.

The DIdeas finished an impressive 19th among 78 teams in the middle school level Science Challenge. The DINerds, with four years of solid DI experience, placed 24th in the Fine Arts Challenge. Forty-eight middle level teams competed in their division. Both Pagosa Middle School teams traveled to Globals for their first time this year.

Returning for their second Globals appearance was the elementary level Smartalics. This team of seven high-energy brainiacs ranked 27th out of 78 teams in the Science Challenge. All seven Smartalics will attend Pagosa Springs Middle School next year.

Pagosa Springs Destination ImagiNation is funded by the Archuleta School District through the state tournament, but our teams travel to Globals through the generosity of the Pagosa Springs community.
