Among the people visiting Pagosa Springs this weekend will be over 200 wrestlers who will be attending the 8th Annual Wrestle the World Training Camp held at Pagosa Springs High School. Teams from Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico are participating in this training camp, which features one of the country’s finest wrestlers and coaches, Terry Brands.
As a competitor, Terry Brands’ accomplishments include two NCAA titles, two World Championships and an Olympic bronze medal. After retiring from competition, Brands successfully coached athletes at the US Olympic Training Center, including 2008 gold medalist Henry Cejudo. Currently, Coach Brands is the top assistant at the University of Iowa, where he has helped develop numerous collegiate All Americans and national champions.
This year’s camp staff includes several Iowa Hawkeye greats, including Lee Fullhart, four-time All American and 1997 national champion, and Dan Dennis, a two-time All American and 2010 national finalist. In addition to these clinicians, from Iowa, several current team members will also be in attendance as camp counselors, including 2012 NCAA finalist Derek St. John, Pagosa graduate and team member Joe DuCharme and others.
Also on staff are Pagosa Springs graduate Michael Martinez, a four-time NCAA qualifier for the University of Wyoming, and Daren Hockett, who competed for Western State College and is currently on coaching staff at Mesa State College in Grand Junction.
The public is invited and encouraged to drop in and see some of the country’s elite athletes and coaches train. Technique sessions begin Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. and continue at 9 a.m. every morning, concluding on Tuesday. Competition and training sessions occur each afternoon and evening from Saturday through Monday.
