Recently in May, the High Country Squares kicked up their heels to the Mesa, Ariz. calling sensation Mike Sikorsky. With many of the club’s summer residents returning, the “Flower Power Dance” of May 14 was a fantastic and fun event that kept dancers moving and grooving to the National CALLERLAB “Caller of the Year” of 2011.
Sikorsky also taught a workshop on calling for four local apprentice callers who learned more about the “Activator System” of square dance calling, which he originated and teaches nationwide.
Our own Jim Park has returned to lead the High Country Squares through the summer and fall months. Jim and Fae Park have dedicated themselves to square dancing for decades, and we are so fortunate that they make Pagosa Springs their summer home. Jim will start teaching the second level of Modern Western Square Dance, called “Plus” to those dancers ready to learn a whole body of new and more complicated calls.
The summer schedule for club dancing is Plus workshop from 6:30-7 p.m, then Mainstream and Plus dancing from 7-9 p.m. every Monday night at the PLPOA clubhouse located at 230 Port Avenue in Pagosa Springs. Contact Lorna at 731-5525 for more information.
The High Country Squares offers weekly dances, regional dances and a wonderful sense of community for local and visiting dancers.
