LPEA to hold commercial lighting workshop in Durango

As part of its free information series designed to continue to help members “save their energy,” La Plata Electric Association (LPEA) will host It’s all about Lights! Thursday, April 19, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the cooperative’s multi-purpose room, 45 Stewart St. (Bodo Industrial Park), Durango.

Featured speakers include Rob Kirkpatrick, COO of Service Concepts, established to help solve energy issues facing rural electric cooperatives, and Rob Ebenkamp and Keith Emerson of Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, LPEA’s primary energy provider, which also offers numerous rebates for energy efficiency efforts.

“Electricians, lighting designers, businesses and the interested general public are invited to attend this free educational workshop,” said Ray Pierotti, LPEA project specialist. “We want to bring people up-to-date on technology and help further an understanding of energy efficient lighting — plus provide an update on the rebates available to businesses and homeowners who invest in new LED lighting. We’ve got a lot of new information on LED lighting.”

Energy-efficient LED (light-emitting diode) technology is, according to Pierotti, evolving rapidly, with advancements being made in outdoor security lighting as well as indoor dimmable spotlights, and more. Service Concepts is on the cutting edge with knowledge of the various products available to businesses and homeowners.

To encourage the energy-saving investment, LPEA and Tri-State are currently offering a $10 per bulb rebate for each Energy Star-rated LED spotlight purchased by businesses or individuals. LPEA and Tri-State also continue to provide businesses a rebate of $250 per each kilowatt of lighting load reduced (up to a $20,000 total) at the facility when replacing old T-12 fluorescent bulbs with energy efficient T-5 or T-8 bulbs. The T-5 and T-8 bulbs operate with electronic ballasts as opposed to a magnetic ballast and are 27 to 35 percent more energy efficient than T-12s.

Because lunch will be served during the workshop, those planning to attend are asked to R.S.V.P. to Pierotti, rpierotti@lpea.coop or 382-7770.
