Pagosa Ranger District solicits proposals for prospective outfitter-and-guide services

The San Juan National Forest Pagosa Ranger District is soliciting proposals from prospective outfitter-and-guide operations interested in acquiring permits for providing guided commercial services to the public.

Opportunities to provide commercial services include big game (elk and deer) and mountain lion hunting, a backcountry fishing camp, horse trail rides, backpacking and day hiking, and Piedra River rafting.

This is a limited offering, and the different services are only offered in specific areas across the Pagosa District described in the prospectus document. Proposals for additional use on existing special-use permits, as well as a limited number of new permits, will be considered. A Forest Service panel will select applicants through a competitive process based on written applications.

Information about the prospectus and application process will be offered to interested parties at an open house to be held at the Pagosa Springs Community Center on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 from 4-6:30 p.m. The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center will also be present to offer information and services for business plan development.

The deadline for application is close of business (4:30 p.m.) Friday, June 1, 2012. Selection of successful applicants will be made by August 1, 2012. The final decision on issuance of a special use permit will be contingent on compliance with any needed environmental analysis as determined by the National Environmental Policy Act.

The prospectus document and application materials will be posted on the San Juan National Forest Webpage under Highlights at

Prospective applicants are asked to download the application packet from the Website. The Pagosa Ranger District will only print application packets by special request.
