San Juan Shootists crown 2011 club champs

The San Juan Shootists crowned our 2011 club champions last weekend at our annual awards banquet held at Boss Hogg’s restaurant.

The competition between shooters was close all year in both the Men’s and Ladies divisions. In the Men’s division, just five points separated the top three, and in the Ladies division, eight points separated the top three. With our club’s point system, it’s hard to make up that many points in one match. Awards were given to first through third place in both divisions.

In the Men’s division, Jeremiah, aka Jeremiah Cummons, of Pagosa Springs, last year’s club champion, and Rowdy, aka Ken Einig, of Pagosa Springs, last year’s runner-up, were tied with CW, aka Charles Worrell, of Pagosa Springs just five points back. After the smoke cleared all three ended up tied. CW shot really well and made up those five points on the other two. We had a shoot-off for all three places.

The shoot-off was conducted just like it is at a championship match. After the shoot-off Rowdy had captured first place, CW second, with Jeremiah placing third. It was exciting right down to the last shot.

Over on the Ladies’ side, Jersey Girl, aka Gwyneth Duncan, of Santa Fe, N.M., led Lil Missy, aka Maggie Skoog, of Pagosa Springs, last year’s club champion by two points with Aztec Annie, aka Judy Haproff of Aztec, N.M., eight points off the lead. As the match wound down, neither Lil Missy nor Aztec Annie could gain any points on Jersey Girl. The finishing order was Jersey Girl first, Lil Missy second and Aztec Annie third.

Our club champions received custom-made belt buckles. Second place received a nice wall clock with an engraved plaque on it, and third place received an engraved wall plaque.

The San Juan Shootists had a wonderful year in 2011 and we intend for it to continue in 2012.

The San Juan Shootists are proud to announce we will host the 2012 Cowboy Fast Draw Association’s Colorado State Championship. The event will be held during the Archuleta County Fair, at the fairgrounds, Aug. 3-5. This will be a national event that will bring competitors to Pagosa Springs from all over the country. We hope y’all can attend as well.
