Pagosa Nordic Club to sponsor WinterFest ski events

Only one week away.

The Pagosa Nordic Club will host the second annual WinterFest Nordic X-C Ski Races Feb. 17-19.

This year’s race events include a free kids’ race on Friday, Feb. 17; Eagle Mountain mock biathlon (using Red Ryder BB guns), sprint races and relay races on Saturday, Feb. 18; and distance races and awards on Sunday, Feb. 19.

Free kids’ races on Friday, Feb. 17, include divisions for elementary and middle school students. The Friday kids’ races will be held at the Pagosa Springs Elementary School, starting at 9 a.m. Local students have the day off from school on Friday, so encourage your friends to participate.

Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18-19, races start at 9 a.m. and will be held on the Kuhn Ranch, located eight miles north on Piedra Road from the U.S. 160 intersection. Look for the red barn. Race divisions include a kids division each day, citizens’ skate ski or classic ski division and a competitive skate or classic ski division.

The citizens’ classic x-c ski division includes 2k biathlon, .25k sprint and 3k distance race. The citizens’ skate ski division includes 4k biathlon, .5k sprint and 10k distance race. The competitive classic x-c ski division includes 4k bithalon, .5k sprint and 5k distance race. The competitive skate ski division includes 8k bithalon, 1k sprint and 20k distance race. Additionally, a fun relay race will be held on Saturday and will include a 2k skate ski and 1k classic ski (times will not count towards combined scores).

Citizen division race registration fee is $30 and includes all races (individual race registration $12). Competitive division race registration fee is $40 and includes all races (individual race registration $15). All Pagosa Nordic Club members receive a 50-percent discount on race registration fees and kids under 16 race free. Races will be scored individually and combined for the awards ceremony to be held at the Pagosa Brewing Company on Sunday at 1 p.m. Awards have been donated by many area businesses.

The Pagosa Nordic Club would like to thank David and Liz Kuhn for the use of their ranch for this year’s races. The Kuhn ranch provides a great venue for racers and spectators, with excellent views of the entire course and Pagosa Peak as the backdrop.
