Annual San Juan Basin Extension Beef Cattle Symposium

The 29th annual San Juan Basin Extension Beef Cattle Symposium will be held on Feb. 15, at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. 160, Cortez, Colorado. The program will be presented by Extension Offices in: La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma and Dolores counties; and NMSU Cooperative Extension in San Juan County, New Mexico.

The San Juan Basin Extension Beef Cattle Symposium has become a tradition in southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico.

Educational programs are important to help us sustain this way of life.

The 2012 Beef Cattle Symposium will primarily focus on profitability, animal health and management. There will be something of interest in this area for everyone who is involved or planning to be involved in beef production.

The workshop fee is $20 per person and this includes workshop materials and lunch. Workshops will include the following topics: Status of the Livestock Industry — “What’s Driving the Cattle Market,” Livestock Marketing Information Center — Leaving a Lasting Legacy, Vaccination Programs and Protocol, Native and Non-Native Poisonous Plants: Identification and Control, and Calving Difficulties.

Stop by and pick up your registration form today at the CSU Extension Office.

4-H year begins

Our local 4-H program has 122 youth enrolled already this year; the last day to enroll is Feb. 24.

Many projects are getting started or have already begun. We need leaders for chicken and GPS projects. Leaders don’t have to be experts, they just need to be willing to learn and teach the youngsters.

Stop by the CSU Extension Office or call with questions or to enroll.
