Youth basketball practice begins next week

Assessments and drafts for the 9-10 and 11-12 youth basketball seasons were held this week; practices will commence next week, and games will begin after Jan. 16.

Games in the 9-10 division are tentatively scheduled to be played at the Ross Aragon Community Center Tuesdays and Thursdays, while games in the 11-12 division will be played Mondays and Wednesdays at the community center. The seasons will run through early March.

Schedules will be available by the end of next week at the recreation office and will also be posted on the recreation department page at Parents who have not heard from a head coach as of next Wednesday should contact the recreation office to obtain roster information.

For more information, contact Darren Lewis, recreation supervisor, at 264-4151, Ext. 231.

Skate pond

The skate pond behind the River Center is open.

The skate pond’s hours of operation are from dawn to 10 p.m. every day, except during the nights when ice-maintenance operations are being performed.

Resurfacing of the ice will typically be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings unless weather conditions keep the work from taking place. On those nights, the pond will be closed at 6 p.m.

A minimum ice thickness of four inches will be regularly monitored, but thin spots can occur, and an effort to mark them with orange safety cones will be made. Pond users are requested to leave the safety cones in place.

We also ask that no foreign objects be thrown onto the ice. The pond will remain open until safety concerns require its closure.

Basketball photos

Coaches and parents who ordered youth basketball (7-8 division) photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to arrange pick up of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and pictures as soon as they are available.

This year marks the 15th year Jeff has offered professional photography service to our programs while donating all of the team photographs used in the commemorative plaques free of charge; thanks again.
