What is Be The Change Pagosa?

As we have become more visible in the community, questions have arisen concerning who or what is Be The Change Pagosa?

Questions have been asked, such as, “Are they a political group, ready to storm town hall?,” “Are they a conspiracy theory group railing against the government corruption?,” or“ Are they another fly-by-night group with some loose ideas about how to improve our town?”

Allow me to bring some clarity to the subject.

It all began nearly three years ago when I was attending a personal development conference for entrepreneurs in LA. The speaker was talking about personal transformation and how important it was to assess our thoughts, which are what create our world.

The famous quote from Gandhi popped into my mind: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

It dawned on me that it really is all about who or what we are “being” that makes all the difference.

I could see that by complaining about everything that was wrong in my life, my community and the world I was “being” part of the problem. I was motivated to find a way to become part of the solution. Once aware of this, I recognized that I was not the only one in this boat. Everyone around me was doing the same thing. We seem to be very good at seeing all the bad, negative things without ever recognizing any of the good, positive things going on or putting effort into making things better.

When I returned from that trip I began a small group called “Be The Change.” The purpose of the group was, and always will be, to assist and encourage each of us to do an inward exploration of who we are “being” in every moment of our everyday lives. Are we contributing to the problem or to the solution?

We recognize that what shows up as reality in our outer world is a direct reflection of the thoughts and feelings that make up our inner world. Stephen Covey, author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People,” said, “ ... all things are created twice. There is a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation.” He goes on to say in regards to how we “see” or perceive the world, that, “To try to change outward attitudes and behaviors does very little good if we fail to examine the basic thinking/being from which they flow.”

In other words, it is who/how we are “being” in the world that becomes our world. If we do not like the world as we are now experiencing it, then we must first change our own “beingness” in the world. That is what Be The Change Pagosa is all about.

We believe that each person has tremendous value and that each has individual gifts, talents and abilities to contribute. Through personal exploration we can individually and collectively become the solution we are looking for in every area of our lives. The group’s focus is to promote heartfelt, cooperative and positive solutions both individually and in our community, through education, co-creation and by supporting and facilitating community programs that exemplify what it means to “Be the change you wish to see in Pagosa.”

Be The Change Pagosa meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Our next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 25, and will be held at the Pagosa Springs Youth Center at 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
