Cross country skiing with family and friends is fun for all

Yes, it is that crazy busy time of year, when people are shopping and entertaining and stressing out over it all.

On the frenzied to-do list for the holidays, there is an antidote to not only help you de-stress, but also to allow you to eat more of those holiday treats without the guilt. Adding a cross-country ski outing with family and friends during the holidays will prove to be fun for all, and one of those long lasting wonderful memories to smile about for many years to come.

Pagosa Nordic Club, the local 100-percent volunteer organization, has been grooming the snow so locals and tourists alike can get outside and play. And under the blue skies, in the white snow, all you need is your red Santa hat to exercise your patriotism by pursuing your right to happiness!

Cross country skiing is what Pagosa Nordic is all about, skate or classic style; the trails are groomed for both. No matter your style, ability or age, getting outside can make you smile, ease your worries and strengthen your health.

PNC hosted the popular Full Moon Ski Social at the West Fork at the base of Wolf Creek Pass last Friday. Friendly folk came to visit around the warm bonfire, before and after skiing the many trails up the West Fork road. There was delicious homemade soup and other treats; and the combination created warm bodies, cozy camaraderie, smiles, laughter and rosy cheeks for all.

The following morning, four classes of both ski styles were offered free; instructors Nancy Burke, Robbie Johnson, Emily Dietz, Suzanne Coe, and Dan and JuanaLee Park gave their time and expertise to help 30 “never-evers” and advanced skiers alike.

Nordic trail use and attendance at the monthly ski socials are free of charge, but an affordable membership in the club ensures continuous grooming and other Nordic ski events. Supporting the club as a member gets you e-mail information on upcoming events, like the schedule of races and clinics, and helps pay for trail maintenance with all the equipment needed and the gas to run it.

You can get more information and securely join the club via a PayPal account at pagosanordic.com or you can mail in a membership donation of $25 for an individual or $40 for a family, or any size donation, to P.O. Box 5261, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147.

Nordic skiing allows for socializing, exercising and enjoying the most beautiful scenery anywhere. Both styles of cross country skiing are easily learned and PNC’s groomed trails are easily accessed.

Give yourself a gift of health and happiness and get outside and ski during your happy holidays.
