Mary Helen Perez, 46, died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at Penrose-St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. A funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 1, at St. Peter-St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles. Father Douglas Hunt of St. Ignatius Catholic Church officiated. Burial was at at Rosa Cemetery in Arboles.
Mrs. Perez was born July 15, 1965, in Durango, Colo., the daughter of Joseph and Rose Sanchez. Mary attended schools in Colorado Springs then later moved to Ignacio and graduated from Ignacio High School in 1983. She attended beauty school in Colorado Springs and graduated in 1984. In the late 1980s, she moved to Denver and obtained her CNA certification and it was also there she met her future husband, Ernie Perez. They were married in Pagosa Springs on Oct. 31, 2009.
Mary enjoyed horseback riding, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. She had a fondness for butterflies, flowers and elephants. She liked to cook and was always playfully teasing family and friends.
She is survived by her father, Joseph Sanchez, of Arboles, her mother, Rose Sanchez, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Ernie Perez (husband) of Arboles, Colo., Ashely Maez (daughter) of Ignacio, Colo., David Sanchez (son) of Denver, Colo., three grandchildren (Bailey, Justin and Joseph Maez), Louis Sanchez (brother) of Denver, Joseph Sanchez, Jr. (brother) of Pagosa Springs, and Helen Sanchez (grandmother) of Grand Junction, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Isaac Sanchez, and her grandmother, Mary Gurule Martinez.
