Lee Robert Murphy, of Pagosa Springs, passed away on Oct. 29, 2011. He was born in Amarillo, Texas, in 1937 to parents Clauast R. Murphy and Audrey M. Murphy.
He graduated from Northrop Institute of Technology in 1959, earning bachelor of science degrees in aeronautical engineering and electrical engineering. At USC and Cal State Fullerton, he engaged in coursework toward his master’s degree. He spent 40 years in a professional career in the aerospace and government contracting industry. Living mostly in Southern California with several years in Washington, D.C., he retired as group senior vice president at Science Applications International Corporation, La Jolla, Calif., in 2000.
Those left to treasure his many memories are his beloved wife of 40 years, Pauline; brother James Murphy of South Fork, Colo.; brother Joe Murphy and wife Cyndy of Brownsville, Texas; daughter, Ronnie Zaday of Pagosa Springs and Dickie Warring; daughter, Pamela Robinson and Gary of Escondido, Calif.; daughter, Melinda Bugaj and Carlos of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Morgan O’Shaughnessey of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and son, Sean Murphy of Huntington Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, Christopher Bugaj, Sharayah Robinson, and Mitchel Bugaj; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lee was a loving man with a big heart and a terrific sense of humor. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Durango, Colo. He enjoyed fishing, shooting, boating, writing, guitar and travel. Most recently, he was the founding member of the Archuleta County Tea party.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, at 2p.m., at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 225 S. Pagosa Blvd., Pagosa Springs.
