Pagosa’s youth to benefit from local fashion extravaganza

Pagosa Springs Youth Center is fortunate to be located in the heart of downtown Pagosa Springs, but more fortunate to have been chosen to be one of the nonprofits to receive proceeds from the first-ever Fashion Weekend.

The hearts behind the event include Maria MacNamee, owner of Happy Trails Ladies Boutique, and LaQuita Johnson, who pulled together the youth organization combo of Head Start and the Youth Center to be recipients of this year’s event. Each of these fashionably creative women has a heart of gold.

The Pagosa Springs Youth Center is starting its fourth year this January. Membership has grown to 500 members between the ages of 12 and 19. The center operates as an afterschool program with a free snack or meal and lemonade. Basketball, skating and skateboarding are activities in the gym with pool, foosball and air hockey taking place in the game room. With a recent donation by the noon Rotary Club, a computer room is available for use by our members. Music and art programs, along with support groups for teens, are also made available.

Staff members are community volunteers with support for the program provided by AmeriCorps members. Staff is trained in substance abuse prevention and partner with the Family Nurturing Center, Archuleta County Victim Assistance Program and the Archuleta County Education Center for additional support in violence prevention, education and nurturing a healthy family environment.

The Pagosa Springs Youth Center is open after school Monday-Friday and holds special events over school breaks for young children and teens. The center relies on donations, community grants and foundation grants as well. The building was made available by the generosity of Power House Ministries to create a safe and drug-free environment for the youth in Pagosa Springs.

This Fashion Weekend will start at 6 p.m. today, Nov. 3, at the Ross Aragon Community Center with a social hour — with food by the Alley House Grille and a cash bar hosted by Rotary members. After a wonderfully entertaining program by T.J. Reid, a women’s humorist, author and fashion guru, a fun fashion show will take place. Some of our wonderful youth will be there to help serve throughout the evening.

There will be fabulous opportunities to buy chances on clothing, jewelry and gift certificates to Happy Trails. Tickets for the event are $35 in advance or $40 at the door and can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce or Happy Trails Ladies Boutique. Come join the fun for another ladies’ night out in the heart of our wonderful and generous small town.

Proceeds from the event will be spent on lighting the center with safer, energy-efficient lights and to feed the kids afterschool meals. Come help celebrate fall, fashion and two fine youth organizations here in Pagosa Springs.
