Michael Lee Valentine went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 17 in Denver, after a valiant, two-month effort to survive serious burns to 60 percent of his body. His family held a private celebration of his life in Bayfield Saturday, Oct. 22. At the time of his death he was living and working in Pagosa Springs.
Mike was born in Colbran, Colo., Aug. 20, 1950, to Beth and Rusty Valentine. He grew up on the Florida Mesa where he attended Orr and Florida Mesa schools during his grade school years. He graduated high school in Page, Ariz., in 1969. Mike was an extraordinarily gifted woodcraftsman. An uncle once commented, “Give Mike a piece of wood and he can do wonders with it.” The creation of his hands will bring smiles and comfort to his family for generations to come.
Mike is survived by his sisters, Barbara Kugle of Bayfield Colo., Maggie Inskeep of Farmington, N.M., and Becky Donatucci of Santa Fe, N.M., and numerous cousins. He leaves behind a son, Jeremy Valentine of Phoenix, Ariz., a daughter, Lori Brandt of Phoenix, Ariz., and three grandchildren, Preston David Brandt, Jayda Valentine Brandt and John Michael Valentine.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Denver University Hospital in Mike’s memory: University of Colorado Hospital Foundation, Mail Stop F485, 12401 East 17th Ave., Aurora, CO 80045.
