The Pagosa Springs High School golf team is in its final week of regular-season play, but the team’s focus remains on the Sept. 20 regional tournament.
The team will take part in three tournaments before regional play, however — today, Monday and Tuesday — and the golfers will look to better their skills before regional action.
The squad finished a season-high fourth place at last Friday’s Monte Vista Tournament and placed third out of three teams in conference play at the event.
En route to the fourth-place finish (out of seven teams), Reyes McInnis led the Pirates on the day with 93, while Anthony Ferguson shot 96 and Drew Mackey finished with 102.
Rounding out the squads scores were Jaylon Ochoa at 104, Jake Keuning at 107, Casey Mudroch with 111, Eric Medina-Chavez at 112 and Joey Campbell with 119.
Keuning and Medina-Chavez recorded personal bests at the tournament, Coach Mark Faber said, adding that he was seeing increased consistency in much of the team.
“We’re starting to see some improvements,” Faber said.
Visible improvements among the team members will be key moving forward in the season, with space limited at the rest of the season’s tournaments.
Faber said four golfers will compete in today’s La Veta Tournament, though, as of press time Wednesday, he still had not chosen the four.
“It’s a pretty good battle going on right now,” Faber said.
Tournament golfers will be chosen based on overall performance, as well as through qualifying rounds each week in practice, Faber said.
Golfers at the La Veta Tournament tee off at 9 a.m. today.
Monday, four or five golfers will head to Durango for a 9 a.m. tournament at the Hillcrest Golf Course and, Tuesday, four golfers will head over the pass for the Rye Tournament, also at 9 a.m.
