Police seek suspect in assault

Pagosa Springs Police Department personnel are looking for a Pagosa Springs man who allegedly attacked three men with golf clubs during an altercation.

The man, David Martinez, 27, allegedly fled the scene and an arrest warrant for felony second-degree assault has been issued.

On Aug. 24, at about 2:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Hickory Ridge Apartments on South Eighth Street in response to a report of a fight involving multiple parties, said Det. Scott Maxwell with the PSPD.

Upon their arrival, officers talked with several subjects outside the apartment building, with three men identified as victims of an assault, Maxwell reported.

According to reports, the victims sustained injuries ranging from bruising to possible broken bones, but all three refused medical attention.

During the course of the investigation, Maxwell said, the officers learned that two of the victims had been at a bar in town with two other men, David Martinez and his brother, Toby Martinez, earlier that night and all had gone to the apartment of the third victim.

Outside the apartment building, at about 2 a.m., a fight ensued between Toby Martinez and one of the victims, Maxwell reported, adding that David Martinez also allegedly entered the altercation and assaulted the victim.

When the second victim entered the fight, he, too, was allegedly assaulted, Maxwell indicated.

The first victim then went into the apartment and woke the renter, asking for help, Maxwell said. The fight reportedly moved into the apartment and the renter was attacked when he came to help.

It is alleged that David Martinez then used golf clubs that were in the residence to attack the three victims.

Toby Martinez was arrested at the scene for third-degree assault, Maxwell said.

PSPD officers are looking for David Martinez.

Anyone with information on David Martinez’s whereabouts is asked to call Archuleta County Combined Dispatch at 731-2160.
