Rotary District 5470 held its Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) retreat weekend mid-July at the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley Campus, located near Glenwood Springs.
RYLA is a leadership development program for high school students. The program centers on an intense, professionally led, four-day leadership training retreat.
The RYLA Retreat weekend provided a series of professionally developed presentations and activities that took participants through a process of assessing their personal leadership characteristics, and understanding the ethics of leadership and setting personal goals.
Brandan Eggleston, son of Bob and Dawn Eggleston, was the recipient of the 2011 RYLA scholarship from the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club and attended the leadership camp. Brandan will be a junior this year at Pagosa Springs High School, where he is active in school activities including Destination Imagination, and basketball and soccer sports teams. Brandan has also been a valuable community volunteer for a number of years, helping with the Rotary Fourth of July parade and assisting Rotarians in picking up trash along U.S. 160.
When asked if he would recommend the retreat to his fellow students, Brandan responded, “Definitely, I would go back next year if I could.”
Brandan had the opportunity to meet and build friendships with fellow student leaders from around the state. Rotary is based on a foundation that fellowship — by getting to know each other — opens opportunities for service that will make our communities better places in which to live, as well as promote peace and better understanding worldwide.
