Big Brothers Big Sisters, an opportunity to make a friend

Become a part of something special and join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado.

You don’t have to be rich or brilliant, you don’t have to be athletic or artistic, and you don’t have to change your life to impact the life of a child. You just have to be there and be willing to share your time and yourself with a child.

We are looking for volunteers to help mentor children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program in Archuleta County.

Adults from all walks of life are volunteering to become a friend and mentor to one of these kids and they are making a big difference. These volunteers would be the first to tell you that they get as much from the relationship as the children do. An article in Volunteering and Aging: What We Know, by Dr. Deena Chappell, observes that seniors who give their time to a volunteer activity and especially if it involves helping others, are happier and healthier in their later years. We have a waiting list of children who are looking for an adult or a couple to be a friend and mentor for them. These children’s lives can be positively influenced and forever changed by someone who is willing to give them a little time.

Share in fun activities with Big Brothers Big Sisters when we go river rafting, skiing, ride the train from Durango, go bowling, play disc golf, honor our females by TGIF (Thank Goodness I’m Female) or shoot off model rockets! We work hard to provide activities that are no-cost or low-cost for the volunteers and children in our organization to enjoy.

An old man walked the beach at dawn and he noticed a boy ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them back into the sea. Finally catching up with this boy, he asked him why he was doing this. The boy replied, “The stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun.”

“But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish,” countered the man, “How can your effort make any difference?”

The boy looked at the starfish in his hand and threw it to safety in the waves. “It makes a difference to this one,” he said.
