The new Humane Society community dog park will be open to the public beginning Monday, Aug. 1.
The “Bark Park” is located next to the animal shelter on the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs campus at 465 Cloman Boulevard.
The park is fully fenced to create a safe off-leash environment in which dogs can run and play. Cross-fencing divides the park into two sections, one for larger dogs and another for smaller dogs and puppies.
The park has areas of shade cloth and watering stations and a hydrant-shaped mister to help cool down playful pups on hot days.
There will be no fee for using the park in 2011. Grants that were funded by the Archuleta County Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails helped pay for a portion of the park fencing, signage and electronic gate lock, but there is no ongoing financial support from any outside agency for day-to-day operating costs.
Bark Park registrants will be asked to pay a nominal fee beginning in 2012 to help offset the cost of park insurance, maintenance and utilities.
All dogs using the park are required to be current on their vaccinations. First-time users will be required to fill out a registration form at the shelter office and pick up a copy of the park rules and regulations. All dogs must be able to “play well with others” in order to use the park.
Initial hours of operation for the very short-term future will coincide with the animal shelter hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and until 4 p.m. on Sunday. When the electronic gate lock is installed and fully operational hours may be extended.
Check postings on the Bark Park bulletin board for more information or call the animal shelter at 731-4771. Let your dogs know there is a park built just for them, and let’s get ready to have some fun!
