Wanda Renner is on a mission.
She is going to run the New York City Marathon this year on Sunday, Nov. 6, to raise money for the Boomer Esiason Foundation.
No doubt there are many other runners who participate in this world-renowned race with the goal of raising funds for a charity or other nonprofit organization.
Few are likely to have much more of a connection with the charity of their choice and its cause than Wanda does with the Esiason Foundation.
The Boomer Esiason Foundation was created by the famed, former NFL quarterback after his son, Gunnar, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis in 1993. Cystic fibrosis is a fatal genetic disorder that affects more than 30,000 Americans. Although CF is not yet curable, the situation is not hopeless. Every day since the CF gene was discovered in 1989, the pace of CF research has accelerated. Today, 40 percent of the CF population is over the age of 18. With advances in medicine and technology, these adults enjoy an improved quality of life. Scientists and researchers are working to find a cure for cystic fibrosis and to develop treatments that improve the quality of life for CF patients.
Wanda’s connection to the foundation?
She has cystic fibrosis.
And a very strong will.
Wanda has set a goal of raising $5,000 for the foundation to help support its work. To date, she has $1,328 in pledges.
Pledges from Pagosans will not be that far-fetched when they are sent on behalf of this Virginia-based athlete; Wanda has family in Pagosa Country, and is in the company of some steadfast relations.
Wanda is the daughter-in-law of longtime Pagosa residents Jack and Patti Renner. Her husband, Boyd, went to school in Pagosa and is now a Warrant Officer with the Navy SEALS, in the U.S. Navy. Wanda’s brother-in-law Brody is a Senior Chief in the SEALS, and brother-in-law Ryan is a warrant Officer in SWCC, the special boat unit for the SEALS. Her connection with Pagosa runs deep with her family, and she is ready to run the race of a lifetime — her second marathon — with the support of family, friends and admirers.
On her webpage, Wanda writes: “I am super excited to be running in the NYC Marathon in support of the Boomer Esiason Foundation raising money for Cystic Fibrosis (CF).
“As most of my family and friends know, I have CF, which makes this endeavor very personal for me.
“When I was born, my parents were told I would most likely not reach age twelve. Well, here I am, age 44, training to run my second Marathon.
“Money spent on research has yielded many new treatments that have helped me and many others live into adulthood with the ability to go to college, maintain careers, marry and in some cases have children. I wish my parents, both of whom are deceased, were here today to see all that I have accomplished!
“I ask for your support whether through donations or well wishes. Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fund-raising efforts.
“Many thanks for your support — and don’t forget to forward this to anyone who you think might want to donate too!”
